Home Gardening – The Benefits

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

You are working hard. 5 days a weeks.8 hours a day. And you feel depressed ! Especially in this economic down hill. So what to do to escape ?

Some people may suggest you to take vacation. Going out off town with family. Some would say : “That is expensive. You have to pay the gas to get there. It also would take more afford to consolidate your other family members to get ready and jump on the car.”

But to get off from this fatigue, boredom and tiredness ? How to escape without spending too much money and time ? how to be so fresh on every Monday morning , when the tedious life start to run again and again ?

Simple suggestion. Gardening.  It would help you to recover quickly.

“But i don’t have big backyard. How can i do it ?”

You don’t have to have a big backyard to do gardening. You can start from a small pot. You can get it from KMART or other general supermarket at competitive prices. Then you need compos and seeds. Flower seeds would be enough. Or even you could get a ready to plant flowers from some gardening shops.

Gardening may make your hand a bit dirty (unless you put your gloves on), but it would give you a small escape from your daily routines. You also could involve your kids or partner to do it.  First time you do it, you would make a lot of mess. But soon after couple times practice you would see it very easy and enjoyfull. Especially when the plants you grew start growing and produce blossoming flowers or fruits.

To carpet nor not to carpet ?

Friday, December 4th, 2009

When you live in southern or nothern hemisphere, you need to consider to carpet or not to carpet your home.  Some poeople prefer to carpet there home because it would make there home more comfy and warm. But some are not thinking that way. They might think having their home carpetted would put them more on going expense in maintenance, especially if you have pets around.

But how if you carpet you home partly. You just need to select which room you would like to carpet.

Most house has Bedroom, livingroom, dining room and kitchen ( i don’t consider bathroom to be carpetted LOL). Me my self prefer to only carpet my bedroom and living room. There reason is simple, my bedroom is a private room that only me to sleep. I need to feel warm and comfy there. The living room is place we are used to let the guest to sit. So, it has to be carpetted as well.

So why don’t i consider dining room and kitchen ? Mmmm because that place only occasionaly visited, when you prepare your food or when you have your meal. And some people are used to spill some remnants of food all around either when they cook or eats.  You have to consider that cleaning carpet from food stain wouldn’t be that easy.

Home made Insect Repellent

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
Sometimes we want to open our bedroom window to get fresh air coming in during the night time. But we worry about the insect coming. In the other hand we haven’t installed insect protection net on the window. So, what do we do ?
I have an idea to solve this problem. We can create a home made insect repellent from fresh Lavender plants. As you know it, most insects do not like the smell of Lavender plants. But if you don’t have that plants, probably your neighbours may just have. So,just look around the neigbours and ask them some of the leaves. A small grab of your hand is good enough.
Then you need to create a small pouch from a remnant of fabrics, just enough to wrap those Lavender leaves. If you don’t know how to create a small pouch you can use a clean old socks.
Put the Lavender leaves into the pouch. Close the opening with the rope. Then leave that one on the window. The smell of fresh Lavender leaves will make most insects run away.

Clean Your Air Conditioner Filter Regularly

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Enjoying the comfort in the air conditioned room during summer is everyone’s dream. The hotter the weather , the more comfort staying in cooled room. But most people do not understand the important thing they have to remember. They have to clean the air conditioner filter regularly. At least once a year.

The way the air conditioner work is simple. It sucks the air from the room , cool it down and spread the same air to room again. When it sucks the air in, there are many dust or small living creatures on the air (it could be viruses from your sneeze) brought in into the system. It is the filter duty to hold those dirts. Day by day, the dirts is built up rapidly and other fungus or bacteria start building their own colony. That means, the longer the filter is used, the more hazardous it becomes unless you clean it regularly.

If you don’t want to clean the filter by your self, you can contact local cleaning service. It is very easy to open the vent and take the filter out. Air conditioner has been designed that way.

But, if you want to clean it by your self you can use little bit vinegar when you scrub the vent. It would be easier to remove tough dirt.

The last thing to do is to suck the dirts from the filter using vacuum cleaner.

5 Energy Saving Tips For Gardening

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Gardeners around the world have come up with many energy saving tips for yard work to conserve water and reduce other energy uses. Learn more about how to make your garden “greener” with these 5 energy saving tips.

1. Watering Can Conservation

Fill the watering can every evening to water your plants in the morning. The water will be near air temperature, lessening shock to plants, and you will use much less than with the garden hose. Collect rainwater in a barrel and fill your watering can from it.

2. Dampen Plants at the Roots

Watering at the roots enables plants to absorb the water faster and reduce leaf-burn during water evaporation.

3. Cut the Lawn Less Often

Longer grass blades save energy in 3 ways:

(a) You use your lawn mower less often, saving gasoline or electricity
(b) The taller blades absorb more carbon dioxide from the air.
(c) It retains water more efficiently. The green color of the lawn will return after even a brief rainstorm.

4. Large Container Plantings Conserve Water

Hanging baskets lose water daily through top evaporation and root-level dripping. Large containers let water percolate through the soil slowly, and less is lost to evaporation.

5. Mulch Your Garden

Reduce weed growth and help soil retain water with an organic mulch, such as leaves or cedar shavings.

Automated home security products

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Home automation first revolutionised home security with the humble automatic timer, which created the illusion of activity when occupants were away on holiday. Technological advances now mean that security for the entire home can be controlled with an integrated system.

For example, there are systems that record people entering the home, call a security monitoring company, and allow you to telephone in to find out if an alarm has been triggered. Let’s look at a sample of automated home security products on the market.

Clipsal C-Bus keyless entry

Swipe cards are no longer confined to big buildings. Using a card means no more fumbling for keys or needing to remember to turn the alarm system on and off. If your C-Bus system is integrated with your home entertainment and lighting, the cards can also be set up to play your favourite song and turn on the lights when you walk inside.

Suitable for: incorporating in a fully integrated system.

ADT home automation solution

This system is connected both to you and ADT’s 24 hour monitoring. This means that you can call your system from any telephone to arm or disarm it. It also has a smoke detector and heat detector, which, in addition to the standard motion detectors, are monitored by ADT. If the alarm is triggered, a customer service rep calls your home. From there they assess which emergency services to dispatch.

Suitable for: peace of mind with 24 hour monitoring.

HPM Excel light switch with timer

Automatic timers you can plug appliances into are one of the oldest tricks in home automation, and here HPM integrates a timer with a wall switch. You can program lights to go on and off at set times of the day during the week, or totally randomly. The ‘lived-in’ look will deter thieves, or you can program external lights to be always on when needed.

Suitable for: entry level holiday security.

W Home X10 wireless security kit

With no need for cables, this seven piece kit is simple to install. It’s linked to your telephone line so you can call to check the status – or it can call you in an emergency. It can also be integrated with your security camera and home entertainment system to automatically record intruders when the alarm is set off. And besides protecting your home it’s able to control lights and appliances.

Suitable for: retrofitting security without the need to lay cables.

Clipsal C-Bus panic mode

C-Bus is an extremely flexible system that can be integrated with virtually all the electronics in your house. It can then be pre-programmed to alter many of your appliances at the touch of a button. A panic setting, for example, could turn on all the lights inside and outside your house, make a call to a security company, and bring up the video from your security cameras on the TVs in your house.

Suitable for: one-touch emergency protection.

TechEng TOCA fingerprint scanner

Here’s a key you’ll never lose and a password you’ll never forget. This fingerprint scanner can be connected to the doors of your house, safes, even the alarm system. Access can be granted and denied to certain users at certain times. If it’s integrated with your computer it can keep track of who’s entered the house and when they arrived. You’ll need to connect it to a computer to add and edit users.

Suitable for: gadget junkies and when money is no object.

Several Tips in Buying Sofa

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Having a nice and compy sofa is a necessity for some people.  But there are several factors you need to consider before you buy it. The following below are few points you need to look at.

Style

Think about what the couch is for – will it be used by all the family, sit in the hallway or be a centrepiece in the ”good room”?
Keep the decor of your home in mind when deciding. Will it match the rest of the furniture? Beware of trendy styles that are likely to go out of fashion in a couple of years. Achieve timelessness by choosing a traditional style.

Fabric Type

Once you’ve decided on the style you need to choose a fabric type. Leather is good for families prone to spillages. Light-coloured fabrics look good but stain easily. It’s worthwhile getting removable covers so you can clean them.
Multi-coloured fabrics hide stains well, while block colours show stains. Ask to see a fabric swatch. You can then see what other fabrics look like and also feel them.

Comfort

Sit on the couch. Get other family members to test it with you as well. Is it wide enough? Does it make you slouch? Or does it make you never want to leave it?

Frame

A sofa should last you 10 years or more, so good-quality construction is important. Timber frames are best and they should be screwed together. As a general rule, the heavier the couch, the higher quality of frame. So try to lift it. If it’s light then the quality won’t be very high.

Cushions and upholstery

Sit on the couch to see how the cushions feel. Do the cushions stay in place or do they sink or slide forward at an uncomfortable angle?
A single seating panel allows as many people to sit on the couch as you like but you’ll have to clean the whole thing when spillages occur. Splitting the seating into two or three cushions usually means the seating is limited to that number. However, if there is a spillage you can just clean that cushion rather than the entire couch.

The Cost

Sofas vary in price from as little as $500 all the way up to $20,000 or more. Work out your budget and then stretch it as far as is comfortable – you don’t want to be replacing your sofa in three years’ time.

How to find the right tenant to share your home

Friday, January 9th, 2009

If you are a first home buyer and wants to share your home with somebody else, we have serveral good advices you may want to follow :

.1.
Think on what sort of person you wish to live with. You may prefer a professional, a student or a shift worker. You can also consider what kind of habit the tenant shouldn’t has . If you really don’t like smoking person, it is better to choose non smoker. If you don’t like drinking habit, choose non drinking tenant. If you are alergic to pets, choose tenant that has not pet.
.2.
Think on how much you want to charge each week. I don’t think you want to put the price too cheap don’t you ? See the market rates for sharing accomodation. You can do online research on internet by visiting several online property website such as www.domain.com.au (if you live in Australia). And consider how often the payment should be paid by the tenant, weekly or every forthnight. You must consider whether that price includes other expenses or all inclusive. Some people prefer to exclude the power bill, especially if you live in four season countries like southern part of Australia. During the winter time the power consumption is used to increase due the use of heating system.
.3.
Think on how many weeks bond money the tenant should provide. Bond money is required to compensate any damage done by tenant during his tenancy. If the tenant does damage any part of the house, you can take that bond money at the time he/she move out. In most cases, the tenant should pay the bond together with the weekly rent payment in advanced at the time he/she moves in. If the tenant can not move in right away, you should ask him/her when exactly he/she is about to move in. If this happens, you must ask for bond money first, to guarantee that he/she won’t change his/her mind. If he/she doesn’t want to get you the bond money, you better go to the next person.
.4.
Think to make “To Do or Not To Do” list that the tenant should agree first before start living in your home. Example, if you don’t want your tenant to use your certain kitchen equipment, you need to clearly mention it up front. You can suggest your tenant to have his/her own dishes. Then,Print two copies that list. One for you and one for him. Ask him to sign to prove that he/she has agreed with those terms.
.5.
Ask for references. It could be from his/her friends or former land lord/lady. It is very important in case sometime unwanted happens as your tenant might turns to be a thief that mug your home when you go overseas. References are to reduce the risk of letting bad tenant living in your house.

Those are five tips from me for you. I hope it has some benefit.
