Fertilisers From Your Kitchen Waste

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Everyday there are million tons of kitchen waste ended on the open land fields. Those waste are from millions family house hold around the world. In several developing countries, those waste are let mix together with other type of waste which can be very toxic. In other hand, some developed countries they just incernate those waste for quick solution.

But because the population is growing very fast, the number of kitchenwastes produced by family houses is exponentially increased. Both method will damage the environment. First one will contaminate the underground water and spreding bad smell. The second one will pollute the air as the result of the combution.

Actually kitchenwaste still has some use after all. You can just collect kitchenwaste (except the oily stuff) into a compost bin and cover them with dirt or sands. Those waste within one month would become a top fertiliser for your garden.

But either most people don’t care or don’t know they just chuck those waste into rubbish bins. It seems like it is time to wake them up and open their eyes. It could make different if we can increase the percentage of people who becomes aware off this issue.

Home Gardening – The Benefits

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

You are working hard. 5 days a weeks.8 hours a day. And you feel depressed ! Especially in this economic down hill. So what to do to escape ?

Some people may suggest you to take vacation. Going out off town with family. Some would say : “That is expensive. You have to pay the gas to get there. It also would take more afford to consolidate your other family members to get ready and jump on the car.”

But to get off from this fatigue, boredom and tiredness ? How to escape without spending too much money and time ? how to be so fresh on every Monday morning , when the tedious life start to run again and again ?

Simple suggestion. Gardening.  It would help you to recover quickly.

“But i don’t have big backyard. How can i do it ?”

You don’t have to have a big backyard to do gardening. You can start from a small pot. You can get it from KMART or other general supermarket at competitive prices. Then you need compos and seeds. Flower seeds would be enough. Or even you could get a ready to plant flowers from some gardening shops.

Gardening may make your hand a bit dirty (unless you put your gloves on), but it would give you a small escape from your daily routines. You also could involve your kids or partner to do it.  First time you do it, you would make a lot of mess. But soon after couple times practice you would see it very easy and enjoyfull. Especially when the plants you grew start growing and produce blossoming flowers or fruits.

To carpet nor not to carpet ?

Friday, December 4th, 2009

When you live in southern or nothern hemisphere, you need to consider to carpet or not to carpet your home.  Some poeople prefer to carpet there home because it would make there home more comfy and warm. But some are not thinking that way. They might think having their home carpetted would put them more on going expense in maintenance, especially if you have pets around.

But how if you carpet you home partly. You just need to select which room you would like to carpet.

Most house has Bedroom, livingroom, dining room and kitchen ( i don’t consider bathroom to be carpetted LOL). Me my self prefer to only carpet my bedroom and living room. There reason is simple, my bedroom is a private room that only me to sleep. I need to feel warm and comfy there. The living room is place we are used to let the guest to sit. So, it has to be carpetted as well.

So why don’t i consider dining room and kitchen ? Mmmm because that place only occasionaly visited, when you prepare your food or when you have your meal. And some people are used to spill some remnants of food all around either when they cook or eats.  You have to consider that cleaning carpet from food stain wouldn’t be that easy.

Home made Insect Repellent

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
Sometimes we want to open our bedroom window to get fresh air coming in during the night time. But we worry about the insect coming. In the other hand we haven’t installed insect protection net on the window. So, what do we do ?
I have an idea to solve this problem. We can create a home made insect repellent from fresh Lavender plants. As you know it, most insects do not like the smell of Lavender plants. But if you don’t have that plants, probably your neighbours may just have. So,just look around the neigbours and ask them some of the leaves. A small grab of your hand is good enough.
Then you need to create a small pouch from a remnant of fabrics, just enough to wrap those Lavender leaves. If you don’t know how to create a small pouch you can use a clean old socks.
Put the Lavender leaves into the pouch. Close the opening with the rope. Then leave that one on the window. The smell of fresh Lavender leaves will make most insects run away.

Clean Your Air Conditioner Filter Regularly

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Enjoying the comfort in the air conditioned room during summer is everyone’s dream. The hotter the weather , the more comfort staying in cooled room. But most people do not understand the important thing they have to remember. They have to clean the air conditioner filter regularly. At least once a year.

The way the air conditioner work is simple. It sucks the air from the room , cool it down and spread the same air to room again. When it sucks the air in, there are many dust or small living creatures on the air (it could be viruses from your sneeze) brought in into the system. It is the filter duty to hold those dirts. Day by day, the dirts is built up rapidly and other fungus or bacteria start building their own colony. That means, the longer the filter is used, the more hazardous it becomes unless you clean it regularly.

If you don’t want to clean the filter by your self, you can contact local cleaning service. It is very easy to open the vent and take the filter out. Air conditioner has been designed that way.

But, if you want to clean it by your self you can use little bit vinegar when you scrub the vent. It would be easier to remove tough dirt.

The last thing to do is to suck the dirts from the filter using vacuum cleaner.

5 Energy Saving Tips For Gardening

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Gardeners around the world have come up with many energy saving tips for yard work to conserve water and reduce other energy uses. Learn more about how to make your garden “greener” with these 5 energy saving tips.

1. Watering Can Conservation

Fill the watering can every evening to water your plants in the morning. The water will be near air temperature, lessening shock to plants, and you will use much less than with the garden hose. Collect rainwater in a barrel and fill your watering can from it.

2. Dampen Plants at the Roots

Watering at the roots enables plants to absorb the water faster and reduce leaf-burn during water evaporation.

3. Cut the Lawn Less Often

Longer grass blades save energy in 3 ways:

(a) You use your lawn mower less often, saving gasoline or electricity
(b) The taller blades absorb more carbon dioxide from the air.
(c) It retains water more efficiently. The green color of the lawn will return after even a brief rainstorm.

4. Large Container Plantings Conserve Water

Hanging baskets lose water daily through top evaporation and root-level dripping. Large containers let water percolate through the soil slowly, and less is lost to evaporation.

5. Mulch Your Garden

Reduce weed growth and help soil retain water with an organic mulch, such as leaves or cedar shavings.
